There was an incident in Vegas with a policeman... he was cruising down a street at night, going about 70 or so, without his lights on, although his headlamps were lighted... and it's generally regarded as reckless behavior. The story continues, as the cop screamed through the intersection, an oncoming driver attempted a left turn. Needless to say there was a collision. So I got to pay tribute to Ed Roth with two cops in a drag race.

There's a medical case going on in Las Vegas in which people got infected with Hepatitis because of really shoddy medical practices. So it's in front of the courts right now and the lawyers came out and are shifting blame to manufacturers of needles or something like that. They wanted to satirize the lawyers by having them cross-examining a hepatitis virus itself, as if they are holding the disease responsible for the malpractice because it exists.

This lady name Pat Mulroy has been the person pushing it along. And they are, naturally, looking to pipe in water from ruralities to Las Vegas, because, dammit, people here are gonna get thirsty after a while. They are having this meeting to supposedly debate whether the pipeline is going to be built, but it's apparently a "foregone conclusion," as my editor says. I think this meeting is just some sort of pretense of taking opinions, but the thing is going to get done, no matter what.

So, the ONLY nightclub that could possibly satisfy the sanctimonious Gaming Control Board; is a place called The Church nightclub.

Harry Reid has been a long-time supporter of a maglev train that runs from Las Vegas to Disneyland in California. However, this guy named Sig Rogich has backed Harry Reid and given him money and, all of a sudden, Reid is no longer in favor of the maglev train, but instead supporting Sig Rogich's pet project, a train that runs from Las Vegas to Victorville, Calif. Victorville is something like two hours outside of downtown LA. So, the whole thing makes a lot less sense than the maglev and in general, it's just not brilliant. But it would make Rogich some money, in theory, if it were approved.

He was giving legal advice to the CIA about whether their actions, which I am not certain the extent of, didn't rise to a "legal definition" of torture. Naturally, everyone is mad. This guy teaches a class at the law school in Las Vegas, and two politicians... Dick Cheney and John Ensign... came out defending him. The article is about how people want to impeach him.

This illustration was about the dubious principles and distaste that's greeting Bob Coffin's proposal to tax prostitution in Las Vegas, which even the prostitutes support. The local politicians are acting like they would never ever have any part of such a dirty act, but they'll totally take the money eventually (hence the protrusion). They just have to bluster and parade some sort of supposed moral sensibilities.

So they wanted the illustration to consist of a prostitute walking out of a hotel room in a huff, leaving behind a man who's denied her services.

An Amnesty International study concludes Las Vegas leads the nation's cities in suspect deaths involving law enforcement use of Tasers. The study found that between June 2001 and August 2008, seven people died after Tasers were used on them.

The legislature's special sessions up in Carson City were shockingly brief. They only lasted a day and I think the general opinion is they put a tiny Band-Aid on a gushing wound. They shifted some budget stuff around to try to fix a bad situation, but it's going to end up taking loads and loads of money from schools and scholarships and rural development and some unused health money and taking out a massive line of credit to be used if they run out of money before the fiscal end of 2009. Which, they probably will.

The idea for this week’s illustration was the Native Americans didn't have border security when the Pilgrims came, and we all know how that turned out.

I don’t really agree with the premise of this illustration though… it implies that Mexicans are going to eventually wipe out our culture/civilization. I just don’t feel that way, all they want is the same thing my ancestors wanted. A better life for their kids. But at the same time I can see the humor in what they were trying to convey.

A: If in the east or Midwest (wet environments) you should spray it out of your mouth so it doesn't look like bird shit/attract too many critters while staying 200 feet away from the water source. In the desert, you should spit into water along with other liquid wastes (urine, dishwater, etc.)

Governor Jim Gibbons again… This time he’s in trouble for an alleged rape attempt. Here is an excerpt from the court documents; it takes place in a parking garage.

“Then, suddenly and completely uninvited and in response to nothing more than his uncontrolled sexual lust, Gibbons grabbed a hold of Mazzeo’s arms, his left hand grasped around her right biceps and his right hand grasped around her left biceps, and shoved Mazzeo 10 feet until she was pinned against the northwest wall, the upper half of which was a chain link fence, in a corner formed by a column northeast of the elevator, causing scratches to Mazzeo’s back,”. Mazzeo says an expressionless Gibbons squeezed her arms “harder and harder,” telling her, “You can try to run away or you can let this happen.” Then he allegedly said, “I’m not going to fuck you. I’m going to rape you.”

Jail Nurse

This was another one for OC Weekly. A former senior nurse at the Orange County Women’s Jail spent three years documenting what she considered inhumane and inequitable housing for the acutely ill and mentally ill women patients in the women’s jail who were housed together, something never done in the men’s jail. The nurse had spent nearly a dozen years working at the men’s jail, so she was familiar with the kind of care they received there. As a result of her asking for the women’s jail med area to be brought up to standards, she was virtually fired. The stress of the ordeal led to her being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and PTSD. She’s been on disability since 2003.

A bunch of babies are all in a pool of water. Seven or nine of them, she keeps pulling them out and screaming for help. She grabs as many as she can, trying to start CPR on all of them but couldn’t. No one would come and help. Wakes up covered in sweat, crying. “I’m sure it had to do with all the babies that were lost,” while she worked in the jail, she says.

This is just a snippet from the story-

“You mean…you’re giving me legal speed?” I asked, licking my lips like Daffy Duck. I reached out to take the prescription from Dr. Silverman’s hand, but he snapped his arm back and held the prescription over his head: “Don’t ever use language like that in my office or I’ll rip this prescription up and call the cops.” “Oh I’ll shuttup doc, I’ll shuttup!” “Calm down for a moment Mr. Ames, and listen to me. The reason why I’m prescribing you this drug is because you clearly suffer from Adult Attention Deficit Disorder.” “What?” “You have Adult Attention Deficit Disorder. It affects millions of Americans, and Adderall helps cure it.” “I’m sorry Dr. Silverman, could you repeat that again? I wasn’t paying attention.” He threw the prescription at me, along with the business card of a local psychiatrist, and stormed out the door. After the appointment, I sprinted to the nearest pharmacy for my jar of legal speed. For the past few years, I’ve been a regular consumer of Adderall, the only cure for my so-called Adult Attention Deficit Disorder—a mental disease invented by drug companies so that they could provide a legal “cure” and profit from it. Adderall’s not a bad drug, and it’s nice to know that you can score speed without having to hit the street and risk going to jail and have your anus torn open. But Adderall is what they said it is: mild speed. It’s killing me much more slowly than real crystal meth would, which suits the doctors who charge me for every visit, and the drug companies who jack up the price-per-pill every six months, just fine: the longer they keep me alive, the more profits they earn.

This is another one for the ask eddy column in Canoe & Kayak Magazine. Here is the abbreviated column-

Q: What is pemmican anyhow?

A: Similar to his lifelong tribulations with the atlatl, Eddy knows a thing or two about pemmican firsthand. Pemmican is the wonderfood of fur trappers and arctic explorer’s—dried meat pounded into a powder and mixed with animal fat and berries into bars that will stay good for years if stored properly. There was an incident involving Pemmican known in Eddy’s then-relationship as “The Final Straw,” whereby an attempt to make rabbit pemmican from scratch for the Christmas gift resulted in food poisoning and a lot of solo nights on a barstool at the Moose Lodge. These days, Eddy still subsists largely on pemmican, but in its European incarnation—summer sausage, which also makes an indifferent Christmas gift to girlfriends Eddy has learned.
